A. Sivasubramanian, a well-known nationalist and Marxist theorist in Tamil Nadu, has approached and analyzed Tamil epigraphic evidence from a new perspective in the articles in this book. A methodology of approaching and analyzing inscriptions as epigraphic texts and thereby revealing social history is promoted in the articles in this book. In addition, the results presented through the research articles in this book provide many new insights into the growth of Vedic ideology and the formation of caste in medieval Tamil society.
