New Centurys Shakespeare OTHELLO

Othello is eminently a domestic tragedy. The characters are of lower rank, less removed from ordinary life than in other Shakespeare’s; tragedies. No King, Queen, etc are to be seen. In Othello the Duke is a figure head. A senator, his daughter 3 army officers; one of the highest rank. No doubt Shakespeare thinks of the men only; even when he depicts kings; nevertheless, when the characters belong to a very high rank, they are removed from ordinary people, We are not so much affected by the hero’s tragedy. The feeling ‘There, but for the Grace of God. Go l’- is less’… In other tragedies fate of hero affects wider circle- the kingdom and the nation. End the King’s government must be carried on. It is not so in Othello.
